When Sondela responded to an invitation to visit
the Albini Catholic Mission’s Lulisandla
Social Outreach Project near Hammarsdale, it was
an important day for the LUSOP team. The co-ordinator,
retired nursing sister and HIV/AIDS counsellor,
Mrs Anastasia Kweyama and her colleague, Sister
Patricia, were interviewing a new intake of 20
volunteers for certified training in home-based
care.

In Their Shoes: Coming closer to children and youth
HIVAN”s commitment to providing children
and youth with a platform to express their experiences
of the world, and to gain the skills to do so,
was advanced by two forum sessions held during
the last several months.

Know Your Child's Health Problems

Coming to life: Sinikithemba/UKZN Vegetable Garden Project
The Sinikithemba Support Group vegetable garden
was initiated by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s
student project volunteers in December 2004, and
it began with nothing except a patch of ground
– not even the money or supplies needed
to plant the garden.

Hope and help for healing:
ARV treatment and home-based care in Bergville
The national Department of Health’s HIV/AIDS
treatment programme was launched in November 2003,
with enrolment for free anti-retroviral (ARV)
drugs beginning in July 2004. However, by the
end of the first quarter this year, many people
in KwaZulu-Natal, from both large and small towns,
could not gain access to the therapy.

Seeing beyond the secrets
Greetings to all our loyal readers, and a warm

circles of contact.
Those who are most aware of how HIV and AIDS affect
all of us - through our work, our families, our
neighbourhoods, or in wider public spaces –
are finding ourselves having to speak louder,
and for longer, in order to strengthen prevention,
care and treatment efforts.
