The Orphans of AIDS
Trust
The Orphans of AIDS Trust was established to
provide for the hundreds of thousands of children
expected to be orphaned by AIDS in KwaZulu-Natal
in the next few years. Set up as a joint venture
by the newspaper media, government and the private
sector, its mission is to gather funds urgently
needed to provide resources and support to the
growing numbers of children being orphaned by
AIDS.

Faith communities in
action against HIV/AIDS
Major gains have been made in Uganda in the fight
against HIV/AIDS. In 1993, 30% of the population
was HIV-positive – the highest rate in the
world – but by 2003 this rate had dropped
to only 6,5%. In part, this has been achieved
through government information campaigns, prevention
work done by community groups and support from
Christian and Muslim faith communities who have
worked together to help decrease stigma and increase
support around HIV/AIDS.

The term “gender” can be confusing.
To most people, “gender” is about
women, but in fact it relates to the experience
of both men and women, and as such, is a human
issue: the work that people do, the income they
receive, the roles they are given and the relationships
that they share are all shaped by social traditions
which treat men and women very differently.

I am doing home-based care and looking after
HIV-positive orphans. I know that one must be
extra careful about germs and keeping clean so
that the children do not pick up extra infections.

organisations
In an ongoing effort to support and strengthen
community initiatives to combat the HIV/AIDS crisis
in KwaZulu-Natal, HIVAN and the KwaZulu-Natal
Church AIDS Network (KZNCAN), have collaborated
to produce the HIVAN/KZNCAN 2003 HIV/AIDS Directory.
